Hundreds of poets from 182 countries on all continents and regions of the planet address you to evoke the historical function of poetry as a great instrument of dialogue, deep understanding among human beings, and a shared vision of the past, present, and future of humanity, in this time of contradictions and political, economic, and social antagonisms that seem unresolvable.

The world moves on the brink of the abyss of its still unresolved problems, believing that we may survive despite everything, despite the more than one hundred armed conflicts coexisting in the present day, the almost irreversible deterioration of nature, and the widespread hopelessness fostered by the current situation.

Thousands of poets carried out a poetic action for world peace during the month of July in seventy-five countries, as if true peace could be achieved, as if harmony among human beings could one day be attained, as if opposing and divergent viewpoints could be reconciled, as if the dream of patiently waiting for the first day of a new humanity were possible now, when the destruction of life is knocking on everyone's doors in every latitude of the Earth.

The Medellín International Poetry Festival represents the embodiment of a hope that does not yield and that will lead, sooner rather than later, to dialogue and the resolution of human conflicts. More than two thousand poets from one hundred and ninety-seven countries have taken part in this Festival, considered by many to be an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, which has redefined Medellín's reality in the world, after the dark times of the war between Pablo Escobar's Cartel and the Colombian State.

It is for these reasons that we ask you to preserve and protect the Medellín International Poetry Festival, which for thirty-six years has been held without interruption, as a manifestation of the safeguarding of the spiritual sovereignty of poetry, the spirit of the arts through the centuries, and the axis of human spirituality. The Medellín International Poetry Festival has given that city a name in the world, as a City of Poetry. Please, care for that noble name.
