Poem for A Discouraged
Warrior Fallen from His Horse

Come, my darling, stand up and return to me!
After the battle ended/ The horse that kept you company
Ran away, leaving no traces

Come, my darling, stand up and return to me!
You, valiant horseman,
Come, please, come to me.
Listen to the song
I sing to your hoof-beats,
A song to guide your Achilles’ heel
Which cannot find its way home.

Come, my darling, stand up and return to me!
The image of you, gallant horseman, remains in my eyes.
As for me, I know that one day you will return
With your wounded Achilles’ heel
Even though your old battle horse has run far, far away...

Translated by Nguyen Bao Chan & Harry Aveling.
